The iceberg principle
❄️ How many of you have heard the Iceberg principle before?
The iceberg principle is a theory that suggests that for any given situation, we only see a partial amount of data.
Take for instance, an iceberg.
As massive as they can be, what we see above the water line is often only a fraction of their true size.
Take a peak below the water, and you’ll see a massive extension of the iceberg, stretching deep into the ocean.🌊
The same theory can be applied to people, empowering us to become more:
🌱 Patient and understanding leaders
🌱 Motivating and successful team leaders
🌱 Effective communicators
🌱 Thoughtful and less reactive decision makers
🌱 Compassionate partners in our relationships to family and our significant others
🌱 Resilient, energized, and fulfilled.
When I first came across the iceberg principle, it opened up a whole new world for me. 🌏
Instead of being reactive and easily growing frustrated with colleagues and loved ones at the slightest wrinkle in my plans, I was more calm and compassionate.
Considering my situation through the lens of the iceberg enabled me to recognize where I was truly coming from and to give more space for what I couldn’t see of my team’s experience.
Rather than coming at the expense of accomplishment, considering the principles of clarity helped me to leverage a deeper and more compassionate understanding of myself and my team.
From here, I could meet my team where they were and provide the support and resources for us all to succeed in cultivating a thriving and effectively collaborative team.🤝
